Experiences to Create memories
We believe that we need unforgettable, beautiful and meaningful experiences to create memories. When last did you read by the fire, play a board game with the kids, light a bonfire, experience the sparkle of a cold Karoo night, climb into bed with a hot water bottle, watch the birds dipping over an earthen dam or just walk down the dusty road with no destination? – simple experiences that create the opportunity to reconnect with yourself, your loved ones and nature through the reawakening of your senses.
Drive to the top of the Ouberg Pass to gaze over the vastness of the Tankwa Karoo and see the sunset transform the Roggeveld and Cedarberg Mountains into sharp silhouettes. And, when you need to do something more energetic, a number of hiking and mountain biking routes are available.
Farmyard Experiences
Immerse yourself in daily activities on the farm like bottle-feeding the lambs (“hanslammers”).
Bird Watching
Watch many species of birds dip and glide over the earthen dam or across the veld.
Karoo Rustigheid
Karoo Rustigheid captures the essence of tranquility found in the vast landscapes of the Karoo region in South Africa. This semi-desert area, characterized by its expansive skies and rugged terrain, offers a unique sense of peace that invites visitors to slow down and appreciate the simple beauty of nature.
Wildflower in Spring
Take a stroll through the veld and admire the vibrant flowers. Though the area receives little rain, when it does, the dry earth bursts into a stunning, multi-colored carpet of wildflowers that stretches for kilometers across the Hantam-Roggeveld.
Snow in Winter
Brrrr… By South African standards, Sutherland is bitterly cold in winter. It lays claim to the coldest winters in the country. The mercury plunges well below zero at night, sometimes as low as -16 degrees Celsius, and the area receives heavy snow several times each winter.
Hiking & Biking
Explore the outdoors by hiking, biking, or enjoying a leisurely walk through the veld with your loved ones.
Simple Experiences
Create lasting memories through simple experiences. Sit by the campfire in the evening and embrace the tranquillity of the Karoo.
The Khoisan Cosmos
Over 25,000 years ago, the KhoiSan, also known as the Bushmen, who inhabited this region, understood that time was written in the stars. Their connection to the celestial world was profound, with an extensive knowledge of the stars that guided their daily lives. They didn’t just observe the heavens; they wove the wisdom of the stars into the very fabric of their existence. The cycles of the moon, the movement of the constellations, and the changing positions of the planets were all integral to their understanding of time, seasons, and the natural world around them. This ancient knowledge was passed down through generations, influencing their rituals, navigation, and survival strategies, and leaving a lasting legacy of a people deeply attuned to the cosmos.
